True Icon

True Icon was completed as part of a graduate project in fulfilment of the Masters in Fine Arts program at the University of British Columbia in 2008.

The project centers around the fictional biography of Veronika Martz, an artist from the British Virgin Islands who goes missing while filming a documentary about the impact of genetically modified seeds on subsistence farmers.

This contribution to the graduating exhibition consisted of documentation of Martz’ artistic practice, stories of her disappearance posted online, information about the artist’s practice inserted into didactic materials for the show, a curatorial talk performed by Natalie Doonan during the opening events, work by Martz, and the transition of Martz into factual records as documented through press coverage for the exhibition.
