Evening Song

Evening Song was performed for Not Sent Letters & Friends, curated by Jeremy Todd, in April 2010. Adapted from Philip Glass’ opera Satyagraha, The Chanterelles (Natalie Doonan and Guadalupe Martinez) replaced the lyrics with lines from the Tao Te Ching. The audience (approximately 50 people) were divided in half, with each group learning a simple, repetitive harmony. The Chanterelles then sang the melody. The audience was unknowingly responsible for the duration of the song, which extended for more than twenty minutes, as the room became a meditative space and participants entered a collective trance-like state.

This documentation shows the debut of Evening Song by Lupe Martinez & Natalie Doonan @ Not Sent Letters & Guests, The Biltmore Cabaret, Vancouver, July 15, 2010 (video by Matilda Aslizadeh).
